Windemere city guide tourist information for Windemere uk

Windemere

Windermere is a beautiful lake, enjoyed by visitors, sailors, canoeists, rowers and anglers.

England's largest and arguably, prettiest lake, more than ten miles long and at its deepest 220ft is situated in beautiful countryside at the southern end of The Lake District. Many of the best loved mountains are visible from the lake and its shores.

The town of Windermere in Cumbria, England is situated in The Lake District National Park and lies 1 kilometre from Lake Windermere, the town itself doesn't touch the lake, and is sometimes confused with the older town of Bowness On Windermere, over the years both towns have grown in population and are sometimes mistaken as one.

Windermere town is a fantastic place to base yourself if staying on holiday, with its own rail link, bus terminals, you are never far away from the mountains and lakes, but near all major attractions.

Bowness-on-Windermere

Lakelands most popular holiday resort - is an excellent centre from boating activities, with over 10,000 boats registered. Until March 2005 Windermere was the only lake without a speed limit, but a 10mph limit has now been imposed. Steamers and launches operate from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, and Lakeside at the southern end.
At the southern end is Lakeside Pier, and Lakeside station of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, and also the Aquarium of the Lakes.
